Prince Hall Freemasonry has a rich and significant history in African American culture. It was founded by Prince Hall, a free Black man in colonial Massachusetts, who was initiated into Masonry in 1775 through a British military lodge. • After facing discrimination from white Masonic lodges, Prince Hall and 14 other free Black men established African Lodge No. 1 (later renamed African Lodge No. 459) in 1784. This became the first Black Masonic lodge in America. • Prince Hall Masonry played an important role in: • Creating networks for Black community leadership • Supporting the abolition movement • Providing mutual aid and support for African Americans • Fostering education and business development • Advancing civil rights causes • Today, Prince Hall Masonry continues to be an important fraternal organization with lodges across the United States and internationally. Members have included notable figures like: • Thurgood Marshall • Medgar Evers • W.E.B. Du Bois • Jesse Jackson • Nat King Cole • ‪@PrinceHallThinkTank‬ ‪@pointsoflightradio9785‬ • #freemasonry
